July 29, 2021 – When it comes to stand-out, role model employees, Morris Hospital’s Jon Wiechen has it all.  An Engineer Tech 2 in the Facilities department, Wiechen, of Morris, has a reputation for taking great pride in his work and doing everything to perfection. He goes out of his way to look for opportunities to make things better and shows compassion toward everyone he meets. His mere presence in a department or nursing unit can “make the day” of those around him. It’s for all of these reasons that Wiechen was selected as Morris Hospital’s June Fire Starter of the Month.

“Jon goes above and beyond for every individual in this hospital,” says Byron Gillespie, Facilities Manager at Morris Hospital. “He makes sure all jobs he does are perfect and that the customer is satisfied with everything. It doesn’t matter whether he’s doing something for another department, a visitor, or a patient. Jon is the most well-liked and respected person I’ve seen.”

Wiechen admits that he is a detail-oriented perfectionist who will go above and beyond to make sure something gets done right, whether he’s filling a work order that was assigned to him or doing preventive building maintenance. That’s just the way he’s always been ever since he started working in construction right out of high school. Wiechen made the switch to Morris Hospital in March 2016.

Wiechen’s commitment to excellence is easily noticed by others. In nominating Wiechen as Fire Starter of the Month, Morris Hospital Specialty Radiology Technologist Jennifer Jones wrote: “Jon takes great pride in completing jobs to perfection and holds himself to a very high standard when it comes to any tasks that he needs to complete. He makes it easier for staff to focus on patient care and provide a safe environment for patients.”

Wiechen says the most rewarding part of his job is knowing that he contributes to the mission of the hospital by maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for staff and patients. He says he feels satisfied with his accomplishments at the end of the day knowing that he gave his best on everything he did, including both the easy jobs and the difficult ones. Still, it’s the people around him that give Wiechen the greatest satisfaction.

“I love every part of what I do, but I’m a people person,” says Jon. “I love being all over the hospital and seeing people all the time.”

In early civilizations, fire starters were individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. With over 1,400 employees, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is the largest employer in Grundy County.
