Compassionate Emergency RN Takes Patient Care Responsibilities to Heart

December 20, 2024, MORRIS, IL- It is often said that working in healthcare is a calling. For Morris resident and Morris Hospital Emergency Department RN Alex Corwin, this was clear from an early age. Her childhood dream was to become a pediatrician so she could care for sick children, inspired by the compassionate care she received as a child. Her passion for helping others has been the driving force throughout her career, including her eight and a half years at Morris Hospital where she has gained a reputation for being a team player who is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Beyond her impeccable communication skills and leadership qualities, Corwin consistently shows compassion and care for every patient she encounters. In recognition of her dedication and commitment to making Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers an excellent place to work and receive care, Corwin has been named the Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers December Fire Starter of the Month.

Morris Hospital Director of Emergency Services Tony Bucki describes Corwin as a positive influence in the Emergency Department. “Alex brings positive energy and a big smile every time she works,” says Bucki. “She is an incredibly hard worker who is always calm and cool-headed, a skill you need to work in the Emergency Department. Her ability to lead those around her is a huge asset for our department.”

Corwin’s journey into healthcare has been shaped by her own experiences. As a child, she faced health challenges that required frequent hospital visits—experiences that cemented her desire to pursue a career in healthcare.

“When I was younger, I experienced firsthand the impact that doctors and nurses can have on their patients,” Corwin reflects. “From those moments, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare and help people feel safe and cared for. That passion has been the foundation of my career.”

In nominating Corwin as Fire Starter, Emergency Department Patient Care Technician Haley Garifo said Corwin is a true inspiration. “Alex is a positive influence not only on her coworkers, but most importantly, on her patients. She inspires everyone to show kindness because you never know what someone is going through.”

For Corwin, the most rewarding part of her job is connecting with patients. “When I interact with a patient, I want them to know they are not alone and that I am truly listening to them,” Corwin says. “I know from my own experiences as a patient and as a loved one to someone sick that being heard and feeling involved in the care decisions makes a world of difference. At the end of the day, our job is to help patients achieve the best outcomes possible, and I take that responsibility to heart.”

In early civilizations, fire starters were individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. With over 1,400 employees, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is the largest employer in Grundy County.
