Cardio Unit Secretary honored as Fire Starter of the Month
December 18, 2017 – Morris Hospital’s Cardio Diagnostics’ Unit Secretary Deb Scuteri-Svab was born to help people. It’s what gives her a passion for health care and the reason she willingly takes on multiple roles in her job. Helping others drives her to deliver excellent customer service and makes her a blessing to work with and a blessing to all who know her. For all of these reasons, Scuteri-Svab was selected as Morris Hospital’s December Fire Starter of the Month.
“Debbie always has a willingness to help others,” three employees from Morris Hospital wrote in nominating Scuteri-Svab for Fire Starter of the Month. “She keeps morale up with her kindness toward others and consistently exhibits excellence in customer service, remembering that patients are not just patients but someone else’s loved ones.”
It was her desire to help others that lead Scuteri-Svab, a Morris resident, to her first job right after high school as an aide at Morris Hospital. Eventually, she became a unit clerk on nights before transferring to Cardio Diagnostics where she became unit secretary.
“I’ve always had something in my heart for the medical field…caring for patients, caring for people,” explains Scuteri-Svab. “This has always been my passion. I love being around the patients, and I love helping people.”
Over the years, her role and contributions to Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers have evolved. When she discovered the department could use extra help during especially busy times, she offered to take telemetry and holter classes. Since then, she helps out with EKG testing and holter and event monitors, knowing that the service she provides helps her co-workers and keeps patients from waiting.
Says Jori Christensen, Director of Cardiovascular Services at Morris Hospital: “Deb definitely goes above and beyond for the patients, treating each one of them as if they are her own family members. We also appreciate everything she does to keep our department in tip-top shape.”
Despite her many contributions, what Scuteri-Svab finds most rewarding about her work is simply being part of the Morris Hospital team.
“I work with such a group of lovely people,” she says. “Day to day, you can see the compassion and caring that goes on in our small community hospital. I do call backs with our stress tests, and you hear patients who are so thrilled with their care. We are so lucky to have Morris Hospital in our community. Plus, I feel so lucky to have a job so close to home that feels like home.”
In early civilizations, fire starters were the individuals who had the important job of keeping the flame alive. As Fire Starter of the Month, Scuteri-Svab received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a Morris Hospital logoed clothing item of her choice, a special “Fire Starter” lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month. With over 1,300 employees, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is the largest employers in Grundy County and winner of the Advisory Board Company’s 2017 Workplace of the Year award.
